Becoming a therapist was a gradual process for me, involving varied life experience, my own journey through therapy, a dedicated course of training and 18 years of clinical experience in different settings.
After graduating with an MA in psychology, I lived abroad for several years, working as a teacher in a cultural and political environment very different from my own. On returning to the UK I embarked on a career with an international organisation involved in sustainable development where I remained for eleven years, working with individuals and organisations both at home and abroad and travelling widely. It was during this time that I became interested in the process of change and ways in which individuals and communities can be empowered. Increasingly I found myself focusing on the internal and often unconscious factors preventing people from realising their goals. I decided to move from the international to the interpersonal and to train as a therapist.
My clinical work in different settings in the NHS, community counselling services and private practice has brought me into contact with people from diverse backgrounds and a wide range of difficulties. I also have longstanding interest and expertise in eating disorders and difficulties and worked for more than ten years in the St Ann’s Eating Disorders Service in North London.
I am an accredited member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and I adhere to the BACP’s code of ethics which stresses the importance of a safe and reliable setting, confidentiality and continual professional development.
